When You Look in the Mirror

Jewels of the Word

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

When you look in the mirror or think about yourself, what do you see? Do you praise God? Or are you like me and focus on every imperfection and fault? When we look at ourselves we tend to either put ourselves down for not being good enough or we look at ourselves “more highly than [we] ought” (Romans 12:3) and take credit for the good. We try to take the blame and the credit. But God says we don’t have to do either. Instead he invites us to look at ourselves the way he sees us; as his child who is “fearfully and wonderfully made” and from whom he took all blame away, through his son Jesus Christ. Whether this is good news or offensive to hear, you don’t own you... He created you, He redeemed you, and He keeps you in his care daily. So next time you look in the mirror, see yourself through the eyes of God and praise him for his wonderful creation!
